NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- Yale University leaders are considering banning a college gossip Web site from campus networks.JuicyCampus.com allows anyone to post anything about others -- anonymously."It's a Web site that sort of came out of nowhere," Andrew Mangino of the Yale Daily News said.
One student said the site has "a lot of empty chatter."Some of the chatter recently turned hateful and offensive, often targeting specific Yale students."There was a Yale freshman whose name was posted on the site, and it said that she had certain sexually transmitted diseases," Mangino said.University leaders are considering banning the site from the university's network and possibly punishing users who log onto it."If something about me showed up, and it became available to my employers, to my friends, the consequences would be devastating," one student said. Some students said banning the Web site would be a violation of free speech, while others said the content is so offensive that something has to be done."You can't simply say it should be banned, but at the same time, it's hurtful to a lot of people on campus," Mangino said."It's the Internet. It's a Web site -- no big deal," one student said.JuicyCampus.com is receiving similar attention from other universities listed on the Web site.Connecticut Attorney General Richard Blumenthal is also planning to take action against the Web site in the coming weeks.Yale dealt with a similar situation last year. The school's law school found itself on gossip Web site AutoAdmit.com.Yale lawyers are the challenging the site.
