HAMDEN, Conn. -- A task force at Quinnipiac University is recommending the college cut its ties with its student newspaper.Last year the Quinnipiac Chronicle was about to put out its first online edition of the fall when the university objected to a story about a racist remark written on a wall.Quinnipiac is concerned about being sued should the Chronicle libel someone. Vice President Lynn Bushnell issued a statement stating that by recommending that the Chronicle be independent and run by a publisher with business experience, the task force was hoping to create a real-world experience for the students.
Michelle Palmer, a senior, said that since the school is a private university, Quinnipiac should have a little bit of control over what happens since it's the school’s name.Bobby Carroll, a junior, said he does not read the paper.“Can't say I've read it. (It’s) not really important to me at all,” he said. Many students said they know other college papers monitor themselves and the Chronicle is their way to monitor their world.“It's the only way for students’ voices to be heard on a large scale like that, and whether the school likes it or not, I think some truth should be heard,” Anthony Puglia, a junior, said.If the paper were independent, however, he said the staff would run its own editing and have a free voice. The university president still has to approve the separation and it would take at least a year to launch the Chronicle on its own.
