POSTED: 12:59 pm EDT April 24, 2008
UPDATED: 4:48 pm EDT April 24, 2008

Southern Connecticut State University is investigating a computer security breach.

Someone hacked into a computer that contains 11,000 names and Social Security numbers, school officials said.

SCSU will offer free credit monitoring for those whose personal information might have been exposed and the state is asking all colleges and universities in Connecticut to make security changes, including using more secure passwords, blocking access and punishing anyone who violates security procedures.

Administrators at the school said they are not sure what the hacker’s motives were.
