Demolition Company Goes Green

POSTED: 12:29 pm EDT July 26, 2007

Steve Feldman, president of Green Demolitions, has seen his company grow substantially in the past four years.

Feldman told NBC 30's Ryan Hanrahan that he got the idea for Green Demolition during a visit to Greenwich when he saw a mansion being demolished.

"I saw the Queen of Irans home get demolished," he said. "It was a 10,000-square-foot Rockefeller estate."

Feldman thought that there must be things in the demolition process that could be saved and donated to charity.

This year Feldman has salvaged 96 luxury kitchens.

"Our nicest kitchen was donated this year," he said. "It was from an architect and kitchen designer that lived in New Canaan. It was worth about $250,000."

That kitchen sold for $25,000.

Most of the donations come from people who are renovating their kitchens or even tearing down a house to build a new house on the same lot.

Feldman said that keeping the salvageable goods out of the landfill is a help to the environment.
