Doctor: Drinking Water Could Make You Look Older
Drinking plenty of water has always been one of the keys to a healthy lifestyle. But a doctor from Washington, D.C. is finding that drinking bottled water could actually be aging people.Melissa, 54, runs, bikes and competes in triathlons, so she needs to keep hydrated.
"I have water bottles on my desk at work all day,” she said. “I often run or bike to work, I bike home from work, so I usually consume a bottle each way."When Melissa started noticing fine lines and wrinkles around her mouth, she was puzzled. The rest of her face was relatively free of wrinkles."I think the rest of my face looks a lot younger than my mouth," she said.Dr. Marilyn Berzin, a dermatologist, said dozens of women have come in puzzled by lines and wrinkles around their lips, a condition termed "smokers lips" because of the similar pattern of wrinkles found on the faces of long-term, heavy smokers."They're attached to their water bottles and patients will tell me, ‘I drink all day long from my water bottle,’" Berzin said. When you're drinking from a water bottle, you're pretty much making the same face as you are when you're smoking a cigarette, she said."Basically, when you're smoking, you're pursing your lips. In this position, you're getting all the little ridges," Berzin said. "Over time, you get permanent lines that then remain and stay."Berzin said she has found that people who drink from water bottles that have sport or straw tops or nozzles all day long, for about two years, will start to develop noticeable smokers lips.Berzin said she has had patients as young as their thirties."You might be drinking in that position many more times, than if you were smoking two or three packs of cigarettes a day," Berzin said.Berzin recommends that water drinkers use wide-mouthed bottles or cups. This allows the upper lip to stay relaxed while drinking."It never occurred to me that hydration was detrimental to my face," Melissa said.Melissa said she is not giving up her water habit or changing her bottle. She's choosing to get a cosmetic treatment to fix the problem instead."I need to hydrate," Melissa said. There are plenty of cosmetic procedures to fix this problem if you've been drinking bottled water for a long time. Typically doctors will use a filler in the wrinkles around your lips. But, if it's not too late, Berzin emphasizes avoiding bottles like those that have a sports top.Five Tips: How To Look Younger Without Botox Or Surgery
