BETHEL, Conn. -- Wednesday afternoon Bethel was rocked by winds over 100 mph as a tornado touched down, snapping trees and destroying property."It's like it took this one street and destroyed it," said resident Michael Tarzia.Tarzia's son's roof was torn apart by a massive treetop that snapped off as the tornado touched down on Reservoir Street.
"It took it, threw it on the roof, threw it on the house, and threw another section over the house," he said. "It destroyed the roof broke the ridge... broke some rafters. "The tornado then lifted up, narrowly missing the center of Bethel, before touching down again on a hill near the rock ridge country club in the Dodgingtown section of Newtown. The tornado passed between John Verbanic's and his neighbors' home then lifted up. It then shifted to behind his house and touched down again, uprooting some trees and snapping others in half."About 100 feet behind my house that goes straight on down west those trees are just annihilated," Verbanic said. "They're gone - a 30-foot path taken out. "The tornado skipped east through Newtown touching down in some neighborhoods barely avoiding others. The tornado lifted up for good once it passed Kristen Ramotts' house in the east side of Newtown, she said. The National Weather Service said the tornado was on the ground for five miles with a path of nearly 100 yards wide. For the latest news, stay tuned to NBC 30 News and NBC30.com
