Safety Mom Offers Tips On Baby-Proofing Hotels

Ever worry about bringing your little one to a hotel on vacation?

Alison Rhodes, also known as The Safety Mom, said most hotels are not geared for child safety.

Rhodes gave All That & More some tips on how to baby-proof hotel rooms.

First things first, she said have a safety talk with your children, starting with looking at the fire plan. “Have them understand where the fire escapes are if something should happen.” She also said to have a designated spot outside the hotel to meet in case they get separated from you.

Double locking the door is her next piece of advice. “If there's only one parent and they're in the bathroom, they are never to answer that door. Unfortunately, they could be saying that they're a hotel manager or security, and it could be a predator."

Rhodes also recommended bringing Band-Aids, electric wire ties and rubber bands from home to help baby-proof.

"If you have a toddler you want to look at access to outlet covers where they can put a pen, or a knife or something like that in, and electrocute themselves."

She advised using Band-Aids to cover those and using electrical wires for lamp cords.

Elastic bands can be used to bunch up string cords by the curtains, which are a strangulation hazard.

Rhodes also said to check the placement of the TV. If it is not in an armoire or contained, she said to push it back.

Glasses, carafes or coffee makers should be taken out of reach.

If the mini-bar is not locked, remove any alcohol or choking hazards such as peanuts.

Keeping your toiletry case out of reach is also key, keeping mouthwashes and gels safely away from children.

The last step, she said, is to get down on your knees, checking the floor for any items your child may choke on.
