CLINTON, Conn. -- Police arrested a 14-year-old Clinton boy who allegedly brought a homemade stun gun to school on Wednesday. The boy, a freshman at the Morgan School in Clinton, faces felony charges. The device is made out of a disposable camera. He told police he learned how to make it on the Internet.
The teenager brought the device to school on Wednesday and showed it to friends. No one was zapped with the device. But police said the school official who confiscated it was zapped when he tried to take it away.Bret Haughout, the teenager's father, said he was outraged that his son faces felony charges. The device does not even "meet the definition of a dangerous instrument, which is the next step down from a weapon," he said.Haughout said his son simply opened up a disposable camera. The shock that is emitted when the flash button is pressed is harmless, he said."It's nothing; it's a camera," Haughout said. But Clinton police Sgt. Jeremiah Dunn said the device is not harmless."It is considered a weapon, yes; an electronic demobilizing device is considered a dangerous weapon," he said. The teenage was charged with possession of a weapon on school grounds, attempted assault and breach of peace.Haughout said his son was also suspended for 10 days. While the decision is on appeal, his son will remain in school, he said.
