HARTFORD, Conn. -- Hartford police said money -- and a new tip line -- may be the key to finding suspects and improving safety. The department is considering a new hotline called Crime Stoppers, which police said has been successful in Waterbury and in other parts of the country. The program would be another way for witnesses to give vital information without putting themselves in danger, police said.
"We are looking for crime solvers, people to get involved," Chief Daryl Roberts said.Recent violent crimes include two armed bank robberies, several stabbings, a couple of carjackings and two shootings with nine victims. Many of the cases are unsolved, and police said a tightlipped community is part of the reason why.Hartford police said they hoping people will cash in on crime through Crime Stoppers. Tips to the anonymous line that lead to an arrest and conviction could lead to a $5,000 reward.Junior Thomas, a Hartford resident, said he thinks the program is a idea."Money is a good incentive always. Bring it on," he said. But the Rev. Cornell Lewis said he doesn't think rewards will be enough."We can depend on the police department, but I think the ends and the means lie within the community," he said. "People have not been coming forth when there was no money. I do not think they're going to come forth now."Police said the hotline is one more tool to help them fight crime in Hartford. They said they hope the city will see the same success other areas with the program have seen.In addition to the tip line, Roberts is also increasing foot patrols and bike patrols. He said he hopes to bring back mounted patrols this summer. The department will also have 11 new officers starting in June.
