Successful Women Share Inspirational Stories

There are many successful businesswomen in Connecticut who have inspirational stories to share.

Thursday, eight of them will be highlighted for their achievements in a special edition of the "Hartford Business Journal."

There was a photo shoot day for eight women who have distinguished themselves as business leaders in greater Hartford.

"I love what I do. I'm passionate. I work hard, and I believe in people. So you're only as good as the people who work for you," said Lizabeth Zlatkus, chief financial officer of Hartford Financial Services Group.

Jill Adams is another local leader. She is the majority owner and president of the public relations firm Adams and Knight.

"I would advise young women, or anyone starting in business, to really think when you're rethinking about a career or job, ‘Where am I going to have the most opportunity to give what I have?’" Adams said.

Giving of herself is something Teresa Younger does daily as president of the Permanent Commission for Women.

"I think I'm good at what I do because I'm passionate about what I do. I love the work that I get to do and I have the opportunity to speak out and lend voice to issues sometimes that don’t get talked about as often as they should," Younger said.

Other business leaders being honored include:

  • Janice Gurendel, founder of the nonprofit Voices for Children
  • Katherine Emery, president and owner of Walker Systems Support IT
  • Gwendolyn Smith-Iolani, president and chief executive office a private investment firm in Hartford
  • Cathy Collins, general manager of Hartford Toner and Cartridge
  • Christine Marcks, president of Prudential Retirement
  • Younger offered her advice for other women.

"Take the risk. Don't ever assume there's one way to get where you want to go,” Younger said. “Know yourself and make sure you do that. And when you get to where you want to be, open the door and reach your hand backwards to pull someone along."
