POSTED: 6:36 am EDT May 15, 2008
UPDATED: 1:00 pm EDT May 15, 2008

Three people were taken to the hospital after a truck struck an Audi on Interstate 91 Northbound in Wallingford Thursday morning. Police closed two lanes of the highway and said they would remain closed until at least noon.

The Audi was parked on the shoulder of Interstate 91 near exit 15 at about when the driver of a Fed Ex truck lost control and struck the car just before 6 a.m., police said.

The driver was inside the car and the passenger was outside the car, state police said.

The people who were injured were taken to Yale-New Haven Hospital, where they are reported to be in stable condition.

Police closed two lanes between exits 14 and 15 and said the stretch of highway will remain closed until noon so equipment can be brought in to remove the truck.

The crash caused a traffic backup that extended several miles and affected thousands of drivers, including commuters who were using back roads, police said.

Police are investigating the cause of the collision.
