Gas Station Owners Say They Are Not Pushing Up Prices
Henry Shah said he is tired of customers blaming him for the high cost of gasoline. They think he is cashing in at the gas station and convenience store in Glastonbury, but he is thinking of cashing out, he said.Shah said he and the other convenience store owners who met Thursday make the least of anyone from high gas prices.
“We have to face the customers every day and take their anger,” Shah said.Business inside his food mart is down 40 to 50 percent, he said.“Every time I look it goes up,” said Frank Christino of Manchester. “Last time, it was $3.70, then $3.83, $4, now $4.11.”Shah said is seems customers said they don’t have money left over after paying for gas.“Right now, anybody who comes to fill up the gas - once they are done filling up the gas, I don't think anybody has any money left in their pocket to come inside and buy a coffee,” Shah said. The stores are also seeing customers pay with credit cards and they are charged a fee when a card is used.“Credit card fees are killing these guys,” said Mike Fox from the Gasoline and Automotive Service Dealers of America. “As the price of gas continues to climb, these fees get higher and higher and higher and add to the price of gasoline.”Some states allow stations to charge customers more for using a credit card. In Connecticut, the credit card companies have the power to forbid stores from favoring cash. Some store owners said they want to be able to offer our customers a discount for cash, which would substantially lower the retail price of gasoline, bringing some of that business in and also cuts credit card costs.Fox said he thinks reform would cut 16 cents off the cash price of a gallon of gasoline.Find Out Where Your $4 For Gas Goes
