The National Pigeon Association's annual convention and exhibition will bring more than 5,000 birds and 400 exhibitors to downtown Hartford. The event takes place in January of each year, attracting pigeon owners from across the country. Pigeons are a familiar sight, especially to anyone who has walked past Hartford's Old State House or along the footpaths in Bushnell Park. But these pigeons are not the common gray birds with bobbing necks -- known as Rock Doves -- that flock to the nearest park visitor with a breadcrumb.
Pigeons of all shapes, sizes, colors and plumage can be seen at the convention. Breeders devote time, attention and money to their birds, which have such breed names as Medinas, Giant Runts, Homers, Kings, Saints, Trubits, and Jacobins. The event marks the NPA's first national convention in Hartford. Pigeons will be exhibited Thursday through Saturday. The exhibition, which features about 200 breeds, is free to the public.Additional Resources:
