The Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy was transported to a nearby hospital in good condition, authorities said.

NBC Los Angeles station KNBC report that he appeared to have been shot by a fellow deputy.

The suspect was also transported to a hospital and was in stable condition, sheriff's homicide Lt. Joe Hartshorne told KNBC.

"It was definitely a dramatic incident," Hartshorne said.

Deputies responded to a call of shots fired at about midnight but did not find a victim. They did, however, find a white sport utility vehicle being driven erratically at speeds up to 70 mph in a Compton neighborhood, Hartshorne said.

A chase ensued. It lasted 10 to 15 minutes and wound up where it began, he said.

A spike strip was put down, but deputies cut off the vehicle before it ran over the strip. The suspect drove over lawns and curbs to avoid patrol cars, according to Hartshorne.

Then, several shots were fired in the 600 block of Butler Avenue in Compton at about 12:15 a.m. Monday, authorities said. Police did not say if the suspect fired any of the shots or whether he even had a gun, according to KNBC.
