GREENWICH, Conn. -- A member of the Greenwich Democratic Town Committee has announced he plans to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays in the 2008 congressional race. Jim Himes, 40, a former investment banker who works for a New York City-based affordable housing nonprofit agency, filed Federal Election Commission papers Wednesday to run against Shays for the 4th Congressional District seat. "For too long, Chris Shays has been single-mindedly focused on promoting President Bush's failed policy on the war in Iraq and has grown out of touch with the hardworking families in our community," Himes said.
Shays has managed to survive several challenges since he was first elected in 1987. He defeated Westport First Selectwoman Diane Farrell in November, becoming the only Connecticut Republican to survive a Democratic congressional sweep. Himes worked as a banker at Goldman, Sachs & Co. before entering the nonprofit field. He is a vice president at Enterprise Community Partners, a national provider of money and expertise for affordable housing and community development projects. For the latest news, stay tuned to NBC 30 Connecticut News and NBC30.com
