Bump Keys Can Unlock Most Doors In Seconds

A special tool that just costs a few dollars is enabling thieves to break into homes in seconds.

NBC 30's Erika Tarantal found out how to beat this break-in device.

Bump keys don't look fancy, but can be used to break in almost any home.

One homeowner invited NBC 30 to try a bump key on his home, which had standard locks.

With the help of a bump key and a locksmith familiar with them, the door was open in seconds.

Bump keys look like regular keys and were originally made for locksmiths. They are not illegal and are easy to find.

Bump keys work because they're cut in a special way. All of the grooves dip as low as possible to trick the pins in the lock into lining up.

But there are a few catches.

The same bump key cannot breach not all locks. It varies depending on the make of the lock.

When a door is dead-bolted, the bump key will not always work.

Bump keys will never work on high security locks.

The locksmith who assisted NBC 30 was familiar with bump keys so he had an advantage using one.

He said to always use your deadbolt and he recommends getting a high security lock.
